Australian Labor Party 50th National Conference, 26 July 2026 – amendment submitted by the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA) sought to include the following sentence in paragraph 2 (https://aild.org.au/australian-labor-party-national-platform-as-adopted-by-the-50th-national-conference-25-july-2026/) of the revised National Platform.
The effect of the failure to adopt the amendment in the National Platform was to remove the obligations on the Palestinian leadership to honour commitments made to the ALP Government as part of the deal to award diplomatic recognition. The proposed amendment was unacceptable to the majority of delegates. Opposition was lead by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
The amendment would also have supported statements by the Foreign Minister Senator Wong that Hamas should have no role in Palestine. Its inclusion would have detracted from the anti-Israel bias of the revised National Platform.
This recognition set out clear requirements from the international community for the Palestinian Authority including recognition of Israel’s right to exist, a commitment to hold democratic elections, enacting significant reform to finance, governance and education, and that the terrorist organisation Hamas must have no role in Palestine.
