The Clyde Holding was a Member of the Parliament of Victoria between 1962 and 1977. He served as the Leader of the Opposition between 1967 and 1976.

Clyde Holding was as a Member of the Parliament of Australia between 1977 and 1998. In the House of Representatives, Clyde Holding represented the seat of Melbourne Ports which had a sizeable number of Jewish constituents.

During the period of the Hawke Government, Clyde served as Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Minister for Employment Services and Youth Affairs and Minister for Transport and Communications Support and Minister for Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs.

Clyde was the chairperson of the Australia – Israel Parliamentary Group between 1990 and 1995.

Clyde Holding’s commitment to Israel can be found in his own words set out in his Sam Cohen Memorial lecture delivered in 1975.

In recognition of his support for the Jewish community and the State of Israel, the Clyde Holding Woodland in Yatir (Jerusalem mountains), Israel was dedicated by the Jewish National Fund of Australia in 1997.
