Today is Yom Hashoah, a day to remember the victims, survivors and heroes of the Holocaust.
On Yom Hashoah, six candles are lit, each one representing one million Jewish lives lost.
This also serves as a touching representation of the triumph of light over darkness.
As a country with one of the highest concentrations of Jewish Holocaust survivors outside of Israel, acknowledging this date is particularly poignant. Approximately 27,000 survivors immigrated to Australia following World War II.
Victorians will continue to mourn those lost to this atrocity and honour the stories told by survivors that will continue to be passed down through the generations.
The Andrews Labor Government is also committed educating future generations about this time in history.
Thank you to our Jewish community for your many contributions to our multicultural state, we are proud you have made Victoria your home.
“Unto every person there is a name.”
